Money doesn’t grow on trees but sometimes that carpet just has to go!

Money doesn’t grow on trees but sometimes that carpet just has to go!

Unfortunately, as every householder knows, things don’t only go wrong when the money is at hand to put them right. If it is a real disaster such as damage to the property or something being stolen it is usually all right because the insurance will pick up the bill, but wear and tear reaching a bit of a crisis point isn’t the same thing. Sometimes, though, you feel as if you will scream if you have to pass that big worn spot on the carpet one more time and something has to be done. Recarpeting a whole room can be prohibitively expensive but you need to do something and the answer is simple – buy a large rug that will hide the patch and, incidentally, give the whole room a bit of a lift into the bargain.

Stick with the theme or go a little wild

Depending on the state of the rest of the furnishings, you may want to stay within the décor style when you buy your large rug. Buying online is really easy when you do this because you can check colourways actually while standing in the room where the large rug is due to go. One word of warning here – make sure you allow for the slight differences in monitor or screen colour production; some can be quite misleading. If the rest of the room is looking a bit tired, though, you could take the opportunity to choose something different – a focal point can be created by using a traditional rug in a fairly neutral setting or, if you have a lot of patterns in the room already, why not go for a bright, bold shade, choosing one present in the fabrics or curtains already. This way your large rug will not only be hiding a multitude of sins, it will also give the room a bit of zing.

A large rug can make a small room look very luxurious

Many people make the mistake when choosing a rug to buy one that is smaller than the space left between the furniture, and this can be a mistake. By taking a large rug under the furniture, you can create a very sumptuous look because the rug looks more like a carpet. If your furniture is too heavy to do this, you can use hearth rugs to fill any gap left by your large rug, or you could use runners instead. This certainly works very well if your carpet has got worn out because you have a ‘track’ where people walk through the room to get to other parts of the house. Most homes have this kind of problem and of course at the risk of stating the obvious, it is always a good idea to use a runner to protect these high-traffic area before the carpet gets damaged. But it is always very easy to be wise after the event!
