Shaggy rugs are still the height of fashion

Shaggy rugs have been in fashion on and off since the Sixties but with new technology to prevent pilling, shedding and random baldness, they are way back at the top of must have lists again. Anyone who can remember the older types of shaggy rugs probably has a horror story to tell – they certainly didn’t manage parties very well and many a Sunday morning was ruined by trying to pick all of the rice salad (also a Sixties standby) out of the pile. Many shaggy rugs you can get nowadays are washable and they come out of the machine looking like new. Plus, of course, no one serves rice salad at parties anymore!

Modern rugs with deep pile look good for longer these days because they don’t mat down. Real wool long pile rugs need a good shake every now and again and thorough vacuuming. Here’s a tip – when you want to give your shaggy rug a good clean, turn it upside down and vacuum from the back. That way, the dust is pulled through the backing and not through the pile. This works particularly well for pale colours, which tend to get a bit of a ‘roots’ problem if they get dusty. Some people swear by talcum powder. Just shake it on to the shaggy rug and pummel it in with your hands. Let it rest for a while and then vacuum it out. Be careful if you do this – too much talc breathed in is not good for you and never ever do it near babies and small children.

If you have polished floors, either stone or wood, they can be a bit cold underfoot and also they can make the room a bit ‘echoey’. Rugs in general make a room more cosy, but shaggy modern rugs give a feeling of luxury that no other kind can quite match. There is something about the free flow edge where the pile tumbles on to the hard flooring that is very attractive and it also breaks up an otherwise quite formal look. Modern rugs come in quite bright colours too, so why not go for a splash of jewel brightness on your polished floor. If you have an otherwise quite neutral colour scheme, a shaggy rug in emerald or a bright clear red looks absolutely stunning and will be a centre piece that will never date.

When buying rugs on the Internet you don't have the ability touch and discuss the various qualities and features of the rug. Our blog is there to give you some of the advice and information that you may need before you complete your purchase.
