From racing cars to butterflies - rugs for boys and girls

Rugs for your children’s room can be extremely useful, especially for boisterous boys and girls! Playing on the floor is common and children generally tend to run around rather than walk quietly. If you have wooden flooring, rugs can prevent slipping and they can also protect your floor from scratching. They can also break falls and keep children comfortable when they play around on the floor. So what types of play rug can you purchase for your little ones?

Boys

Boys may not be very enthusiastic about a rug but there are plenty of designs in our range to keep their imaginations active. Our boys’ rugs are designed to be used as a focal point of the room and they can also take part in play as they have very unique designs. Why not place our blue car shaped rug at the end of the bed or in your boy’s playroom? He can have fun pretending it’s the real deal! There are also pirate designs for boys who love action cartoons and films. In addition, there are rugs with images of rockets, trucks and even a football pitch for sports lovers. For those who want to encourage learning, there are also board game themes in our boys’ rugs. All boys rugs are comfortable and designed to be hard wearing therefore they will not need to be replaced frequently.

Girls

Little girls’ rooms are often decorated in bright, bold designs and have a straightforward colour scheme. This makes it easier to choose a complementary rug to keep the floor clean and free from scratches. So what kind of rugs are available for little girls’ rooms?

Designs in our girls range can really bring your child’s bedroom to life and can act as a centrepiece to their room. Beautiful pink castles and butterfly themed rugs can be found and the main colours include shades of purple, pink and yellow. Images of sweetheart sweets and liquorice allsorts are also available which can really draw the eye and act as a centrepiece. Comfortable shaggy rugs in love heart designs are ideal for comfort under the feet. Board game rugs are great for those who want to encourage learning as well as play.

Other budget rugs in our range include images of dinosaurs, hopscotch and the Union Jack. Many of our children’s rugs are unisex therefore there is something for every little boy or girl’s rooms. There are also rugs for older girls and boys too.

Using budget rugs to modernise your home

Using budget rugs to modernise your home

Have you grown tired of your old decor and are in need of a change? Refurnishing a home can be costly and can be an extensive job. However, some accessories like some budget rugs can jazz up even the dullest of decor. From geometric patterns to bright and bold colours, there is a modern contemporary rug to suit every taste and every home.

Why choose modern rugs?

Updating your decor can be an expensive and time consuming task. However, you can make use of rugs to give your home a contemporary, up to date feel at a much lower price. Geometric patterns can set off plain decor and can also revitalise a simply decorated room. Choose a colour from the design in your modern rug and pick complementary accessories to scatter around the room. For example, choose bold pink and match cushions, throws and lampshades to this colour in your new rug.

Types of modern rug

Contemporary modern rugs come in a wide variety of designs, styles, patterns colours and materials. There are woven rugs, natural rugs, cotton, wool and synthetic modern rugs. In addition, these rugs come in all shapes and sizes. So what type of contemporary rug should you choose? Of course, you should ensure that it complements the existing decor in your chosen room. Although many contemporary rugs come in contrasting colours and patterns, you can choose one colour in your rug to match to the decor. If your rug is going to be placed in an area where there will be a high number of people walking (e.g. hallway) then choose something in a tougher material such as leather or synthetic.

Designs and styles

The retro look is considered very contemporary and is popular in rugs. They often come in geometric designs with very bright colours which were popular in the 60s and 70s. If you are looking for something contemporary but more simplistic, a rug with clean lines or two contrasting colours may work better for you. Try a monochrome look or a striped design in two or three colours. If you are really looking to make your rug an eye catching piece, choose one in an animal print or tribal design. Although they may seem old fashioned, they are now found in a number of modern homes and are considered very contemporary. Contemporary modern rugs can really show off your sense of style and taste when you have visitors. Go for bold brights and geometric designs and match them with complementary accessories.

Animal Magnetism

Animal Magnetism

Although there may be some consumers that are unwilling to consider animal skin rugs as a potential part of their décor, there are many different types of animal skins available on the market. Today, these are predominantly available as a bi-product of the meat industry, with cowhide being dyed in different animal print patterns. The zebra and tiger print skins available would be very suitable for a rural home with natural skin rugs in tans and browns, fit in well with many contemporary colour schemes.

The soft and warm texture of cowhide rugs is aesthetically appealing, and ties in well with leather or suede furniture. The range is not only limited to simple cowhide skins or printed hides. Suede rugs are soft underfoot and the range of colours from blacks and slate-grey to reds and greens can fit into any colour scheme. Suede shaggy rugs take the texture of suede to the next level, with, not only soft texture, but depth that you can sink your toes into.

Plain hide or leather rugs are attractive and varied, but a rug that holds pride of place in many homes is the sheepskin. Strong and durable these fleeces are warm and soft, and feature in many bedrooms and hearths. Natural fleece is a unique material that can never be truly recreated synthetically.

For the consumer who does not ethically agree with the use of animal skins, there are synthetic alternatives. Woollen and synthetic sheepskins are affordable and easier to maintain, these may be an option if fleeces are required in multiple rooms, as sheepskins are still amongst the more expensive rug materials. Animal print rugs are popular, particularly in children’s bedrooms, with zebra and tiger stripes available from most online rug specialists.

Ethics is not the only thing to think about when making the decision between skin or synthetic. Suede in particular is very difficult to clean, as are sheepskin rugs, and both types of rugs require specialist cleaning. This potentially limits size options, and many retailers only stock small or medium rugs. By definition, hides are only the size of the animal they came from, so again, dimension options are limited. In general, rugs from animal skin are more expensive than synthetic options, and are not as readily available.

Rug Zone offers a range of sheepskin, suede and leather rugs in a surprising range of sizes and colours. These are occasionally out of stock, due to their popularity and relative scarcity.

Adding something a little different to your home – Moroccan rugs

Adding something a little different to your home – Moroccan rugs

We all have different ideas about what makes the perfect type of rug for our homes. Some may opt for simple designs while others will go for more ornate and complex ones. You may like the idea of choosing wool rugs, whereas others may go for rugs made from a variety of other materials.

There is plenty of choice with regard to the origin of the rugs too. Moroccan rugs are famous far beyond Morocco itself, namely because the people there have been making them for many years. Traditionally speaking the Moroccan people weave them by hand, meaning each one is completely unique. You will never hold two up together and confirm they are identical.

This means if you want something completely different for your home, Moroccan rugs could give you the answer you’ve been looking for. One thing to note is the variety of colours most of these rugs provide you with. For example, you’ll see many rugs that are comprised of a riot of colours. These might be all different or they could all be of similar shades, and yet they still provide a design as you look more closely.

If you decide you will get this type of rug for your home, it makes sense to look out for a rug sale. This will knock down the price of anything you buy, and since traditional rugs like these tend to be pricier owing to their handmade quality they can turn out to be a lot more expensive than other rugs. The best websites will also have a wide variety of individual rugs and at rug zone we now offer machine made variations of the Moroccan style rugs which are affordable for everyone to own. Since we now know they are all different from one another, this gives you the best chance of finding exactly the type of rug you want.

Finally, be open-minded when looking for a rug like this. You won’t spot something that is exactly the type of rug you want. Instead you will probably see there are several that could fit with your colour scheme. Check out all the options and narrow down your choices as much as you can. You can then focus on each one in turn and consider which would best fit in with the colour scheme and vision you had in mind. Either way you will get a stunning rug at an affordable price if you get Moroccan rugs from an online rug sale.

Pastel perfect rugs in pretty hues are fit for your little princess

Pastel perfect rugs in pretty hues are fit for your little princess

You thought that the nursery décor would last for a few more years, but time flies, and your little one is at the stage where she wants a bedroom fit for a princess! You don’t have to spend a fortune – whether you redecorate from scratch or simply add some princess-perfect home accessories, she’ll be dreaming of Prince Charming in no time at all.

Pink to make the boys wink

Pink has always been a feminine colour, and it’s a great place to start when decorating with a princess theme in mind. Whether you choose pastel pink floral rugs, vibrant fuchsia circular rugs or summer striped rugs with complementary shades of aubergine and purple, pink is perfect for any little girl’s bedroom. Be bold and choose a circular or oval rug – oval wool rugs in purple and mulberry are the perfect contrast to sugary pink décor, and since purple is the colour of creativity, you’ll be encouraging her mind too!

Pick a rug for your princess

Ask your child who their favourite Disney princess is and it will inevitably be Cinderella or Snow White – even nowadays with modern Disney princesses popping up all over, Princess Jasmine never seems to make the list! Use their favourite princess to inspire your décor – if Ariel the Little Mermaid is a hit, pick nautical inspired accessories and perhaps a pastel sea-green shaggy rug which will be super-soft underfoot. If Cinderella is their princess of choice, opt for pale pink and baby blue – the colours of her dress in the Disney film. Teal blue round shaggy rugs look beautiful set against dark wood flooring and pink walls, to create the perfect princess pad!

The colour of royalty

One day your little princess will grow into a queen, and since purple is the colour of royalty, it’s a great choice for any aspiring Rapunzel. Shimmer shaggy rugs in vibrant violet are the ideal choice for a children’s bedroom with their mix of thick and thin yarn which catches the light and sparkles beautifully. Kids will also love pixelated designs with their combination of fuchsia, blue and white. Remember to choose a durable fibre for kids’ rooms such as polypropylene or Maclon fibre – these are hardwearing and stain resistant, so ideal for high-traffic areas or anywhere that could get messy!

Whichever rug you choose for your little princess’s bedroom, make sure it’s soft and luxurious. Sometimes being a princess can be so exhausting that it’s too much effort to even make it into bed, so don’t be surprised if you find your little one dozing off on their new shaggy rug way before the clock strikes midnight.

the clock is ticking for Christmas, so have a look at the new range of Kids Rugs now available at Rug Zone

Make a statement with large rugs

Make a statement with large rugs

Most people want to make a splash in their homes in some way. There are plenty of different ways you can do this in your home. For instance you could pick a bold colour for a feature wall, or choose wallpaper that stands out in the same way. Alternatively you could focus on soft furnishings as these are easier to change if you decide to opt for a different look.

One of the best ways to add a new look to your home and make a statement that will stand out is to look atbig rugs. The good news is there are lots of different ones to choose from and they come in all kinds of sizes. It is worth remembering that large wool rugs are large in relation to the room they go in. So a relatively small rug in relation to other rugs could be viewed as large if it goes into a small room where it takes up most of the floor space.

If you’ve decided that huge rugs will help you achieve the look you desire, it is worth looking into whether you want a patterned rug or a plain one. This will largely depend on the decor in the rest of the room. For example if you have a patterned carpet you wouldn’t want to put a large patterned rug on top of it – the two would undoubtedly clash. However if you have a plain floor covering (whatever it might be) you can certainly go for a patterned solution. Alternatively a patterned carpet would contrast well with a plain rug.

Choose a colour that will compliment the rest of the room too. For example natural colours would demand a natural coloured rug as well. You can still choose something that will stand out and be a feature in the room you are decorating or updating.

It’s also worth shopping around for some of the best deals. Naturally, large rugs will be more expensive than small ones, but it doesn’t have to mean they will be prohibitively expensive. You’d be surprised how affordable some of these deals can be. Once you find a website that has a great range of affordable rugs on sale, you know you’re in the right place to get the deal you really want.

So if you have a room that requires an update, make sure you update it now with large rugs that look fabulous.
